Genetic modification of trees and its benefits
The reading is about genetic modification of trees. The passage claims that this method brings about lots of benefits and introduces three of them. The lecture points out that despite their benefits they can be harmful as well. The lecture contradicts the benefits which have been stated in the article and criticize each with some explanations.
First, article claims that genetically modified trees are designed to survive in harsh situations and to be more resistance than normal ones to especial kinds of pests. The professor in the lecture, however, contradicts this idea. She claims that these kinds of trees are uni formally designed to withstand a special situation and pests. She states in spite of their relatively more resistance to these special predefined situation, if other kinds of pests attack these trees or climate change radically, the normal trees will have more chance to survive because of their vast diversity.
Furthermore, the passage states that the modified trees grow faster and produce more products, thus, bringing more economical benefits. However, the professor states that these trees have lots of hidden expenses. She says the seeds of these trees are designed by factories and are more expensive than normal ones. Also, according to law one cannot collect the seeds of these trees and plants it and have to pay the company for the seeds.
Third, in the last paragraph of the article it is mentioned that the modified trees can be used to address the growing demand for firewood and building timber because of their fast pace of growing. Nevertheless, the professor claims that this fast growing rate of these trees can be risky for other kinds of trees in nature. She states that these trees are growing aggressively and would out-compete for nutrition and resources and as a result they will crowd out in forests and cause other kind of trees to be endangered and may be distinct.
