The Chevalier de Seingalt
There has been a ton of debate as to how reliable the memoir of the Chevalier is. More specifically, the writer casts doubt on the credibility of the memoir written by Chevalier close to end of his life. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the professor believes that the writing of Chevalier is very credible historical resource, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
Firstly, the author states that in memoir Chevalier states that he was a rich person with considerable assets, which allowed him to make parties often in Switzerland. However, the writer casts shadow on that since, according to the some evidence he borrowed money from merchant. In the listening , however, the speaker stands in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states that he indeed was rich, but still borrowed from merchants not due to lack of money but rather due to complicated system of asset-to-money conversion time.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, think that the dialogue written in memoir between Voltaire and Chevalier lacked accuracy, since the actual conversation was held a long time ago. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states that the Chevalier had copybooks where he had written the dialogues the same night after conversation and there are witnesses that support this claim.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that the story of escape from the jail is imaginary creation of Chevalier. Since, according to author, it was more realistic that he had bribed the jailers to free him. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that bribery was no option for him and that the story with escape is indeed true. He goes on to say that the evidence from governmental documents of those time support this claim.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about the reliability of the Chevalier memoirs. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
