Populations of the yellow cedars
The reading passage is about the causes of a decline in the populations of yellow cedar trees in North America but the lecturer refutes the reading's ideas.First, the reading says bark beetles, a kind of insect, attack the trees and their larvae eat the wood which damages the trees. However, the lecturer says healthy cedars are resistant to insects because they produce a poison that kills the insects and that the insects attack trees are already sick, damaged, or even dead.Second, according to the reading brown bears claw at the tree bark because it has much sugar which bears want to eat them. But the lecture rejects this idea and believes that it happens sometimes that bears attack to trees, but it is not the cause of destroying because there are not any bears in that area where cedars grow. Finally, the reading passage says changing climate is another causes which destroys yellow cedars because trees always grow at the first of spring, but now because of changing climate, those grow at the end of winter, so on cold winter nights that is possible to freeze the root of trees and eventually killing them. While according to the lecture most of the trees usually died somewhere in the low elevation where is warm than the high elevation where is cold so this cause cannot be responsible for killing cedars.
