In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
The reading and lecture both are about number of working days in the week, four days or five days. The reading states that working four days in a week will benefit economy as a whole, companies and employees, whereas the lecture states that the four days working is not beneficial. In addition, lecturer mentions several reasons on three arguments made by the author of reading paragraph.
First of all, according to the reading, the shortened week will increase the profit of company as employees will feel relaxed and rested, and hence, changes of errors in their work will reduce. In addition, company can hire more staff for same money as four-day employee will be paid only 80 percent of the nominal rate. However, the lecturer disputes this point. According to the lecturer, hiring more staff will need more training and health care of staff owing to cut the company’s profit. Furthermore, more staff means more space and more computers in the company.
Secondly, the reading states that, this offering this option will reduce the country’s unemployment rates. Moreover, new employees will be hired at only 80 percent rate. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that this will make jobs unavailable, which in turn force the current employee to work overtime and company will raise expectation from the employees, making no job creation.
Lastly, the reading states that this offer will improve the individual employee lives giving them extra time to spend with their family and friends. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions about the loss in job stability due to more free time. Furthermore, lecturer claims that during the bad time of
company, the four days employees will be the first to fire from company, since the five-day employees will be used for management purposes as they devote more time to company.
In conclusion, the lecturer challenged the author of reading with the three effective arguments.
