In the passage, the author claims that humpback whales who migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes can manage to do this by using stars as a help. The article brings up three reasons to support this. However, the speaker contends that this evidence is not convincing and refutes each of them.
At first, the passage holds the view that whales' brain has a high degree of complexity. Hence their cognitive ability help them to use night sky for orientation. The professor, on the other hand, believes that other animals like Ducks use night sky for orientation, while they have average cognitive ability and average inteligence. The fact that whales are inteligent doesn't mean that they use stars for navigation and there is no connection between them.
Additionally, the writer mentions that humpback whales migrate in straight lines. In order to maintain their straight direction they could rely on stars at night to provide them with external signs. Nevertheless, the professor points out that whales can feel the magnetic field of earth with the help of chemical in their body, called biomagnetic. Animals with biomagnetic are sensitive to earth's magnetic field. As a result whales use their magnetic sense for navigation rather than night stars.
Finally, the author suggests that humpback whales are sometimes observed floating up for minutes at a time, their heads above the water as though they were looking upward. This behavior is called spy-hopping. One explanation for this behavior is that the whales are looking at the stars. On the contrary, the professor states that spy-hopping is an rare activity in the whales. In addition, some sharks tend to do this function, though they don't migrate or look at the stars. Instead they do it for hunting animals. Moreover, sometimes whales do spy-hopping in the day, when there is no star in the sky. Therefor, this theory is pure speculation.
