All over the world, societies are facing a growing problem with obesity. This problem affects both children and adults. What are the reasons for this rise in obesity? How could it be tackled?

Countries worldwide are dealing with the issue of obesity among all age groups. One reason this problem exists is the over-consumption of fast foods and a possible solution would be tax imposition on these foods, accompanied by lower cost of fresh produce.

People are increasingly becoming obese because they are consuming more junk food rather than cooking healthy home-made meals. This is due to the fact that a large number of adults have busy work schedules, leaving them with little time to think of food. It is therefore easier and quicker to purchase ready-made meals or take-aways for the family. It has been reported in national dailies across US that the sale of convenience foods have risen by 70% in the last 8 years. This issue must be addressed without further delay to prevent an obesity-related epidemic such as diabetes in the near future.

An approach in tackling this issue is that governments all over need to enforce the imposition of taxes on these unhealthy products, especially those with high sugar and trans-fat contents. This would caution consumers on the quality of what they eat and in the long run lose considerable weight. For instance, in 2003, Germany placed levies on these foods and at the same time, fixed lower prices on all fresh produce in their markets and this largely reduced the amount of junk food purchased and consumed.

In conclusion, being overweight has become a huge concern for everyone due to over-indulgence on less-healthy meals. If authorities begin to place heavy fines on the purchase of these products and make unprocessed produce easily and readily accessible, then this problem would be solved.
