TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya wi
The writer in the passage states that the evergreen torreya is going extinct and experts want to prevent this from happening. They give three options to preserve the plant species. But the lecturer disagrees with these options and explains her point of view.
In the written statement it say's the torreya will become extinct if steps are not taken to preserve it. The professor finds fault in all the possible forms the evergreen can be saved. The first option given by the reading is to try to grow the plant in the native habitat. The problem with this is the microclimate is affected by the surrounding areas and with the change in climate the land will be affected. this will be bad because it would be a waste of seeds.
The second possibility is to carry some of the seeds from the living organism to another area further north. The person potrays this as a terrible idea and provides the example of a time when something similar was done with a different species called Black locust tree and this species spread at a fast rate in the area and it outcompeted the local trees. The person says this same thing can happen with torreya.
The third example is keeping it in research greenhouses. this possesses a problem because the tree will not be able to withstand disease in the wild. The greenhouse would have to be enormous in order for the possibility of this to work and even with this it might not work.
In conclusion the torreya tree is in serious trouble and the solution offered by the reading is highly discouraged by the speaker.
