TPO 55 Writing Integrated
Because of climate change, more and more land that was once used to grow crops or provide food for animals is turning to dry, unusable desert land. There are many proposals about how to stop this process, known as desertification. A number of proposals involve growing trees, because trees can help protect soil and provide many other benefits to fight against desertification. Some scientists have proposed that the best way to grow trees in dry areas in danger of desertification is by using a box-shaped device surrounding the young tree. The device collects water that condenses from vapor in the atmosphere and helps the tree to grow. However, other scientists believe that this device will not be successful in fighting against desertification for the following reasons.
The reading passage states that using devices to grow trees in order to prevent lands from drying out will be a successful plan. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on the reasons presented by the reading passage and finds them unconvincing.
First, considering the reading passage the cost of growing trees with these devices is too high that some countries can not afford the cost of applying this process for millions of trees. In contrast, the professor in lecture contradicts the idea and further explains that a tree grows enough within this device, the device can be removed and reused for another tree. So the final cost will not be that much high since each device can be used to grow about 20 trees.
Second, the reading claims that this plan needs participation of local people for installing and maintaining the trees but local people in these harsh areas are mostly reluctant to involve in this process because the trees are not beneficial for them. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture contradicts the idea and adds that some rewards can be planned to motivate local people to take part in this process. They can be allowed to use some devices for growing vegetables or use branches of the grown trees as firewoods which will encourage them to get involved in this process.
Third, the author in the reading passage puts forward the idea that these devices have a limited capacity of water and can just support trees for a restricted time. after that the trees can not survive the harsh environment alone since in some areas there will be no rain in 6 months which will the trees die. On the other hand, the speaker in the lecture refutes the information presented by the reading passage and makes the point that grown trees will be able to survive in harsh environments because of their long roots which reach the underground sources of water. Also, she mentions that 90% percents of trees in Sahara desert were able to survive after the devices were removed.
