The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot be stopped and that it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations in all of North America.
The reading and the lecture are both about the impact of zebra mussel on fish populations in North America. While the author of the reading states three reasons to argue that the invasion of zebra mussel to North America could not be prevented and it would result in a serious threat, the lecturer challenges each of these reasons.
To begin with, the lecturer points out that if ships required to empty what is called ''ballast water", where zebra mussel survives, in the ocean before entering North America borders, this would stop the invasion of the zebra mussel. By doing that, the zebra mussel spread could be controlled.
Secondly, the writer argues that zebra mussels could dominate the area they reached to. In the article, it is mentioned that there are no natural predators attacking zebra mussels in the new habitat, therefore, they will dominate the new area. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by stating that this case is true only at the beginning of the invasion. But after a while, natural predators will occur, such as birds, and they will feed on zebra mussels.
Lastly, the lecturer refutes the idea that zebra mussels present will lead to decreasing the overall fish population of the new habitat. Furthermore, he says that even if zebra mussel might have a negative effect on plankton eaters, they might make a positive impact on other species that do not eat plankton.
