TPO 30

The reading and the listning are both about a special burning mirror that could be used by greeks in a war againts the roman navy. Whereas the writer of the passage believes that it is not a possible technology in the incient time, the speaker claims that the provided reasons in the reading are impractical. Moreover, the orator provides 3 theories to cast doubt on the main points of the penman.

First of all, the author believes that technology advances in greek was not that much progressed to provide a wide ship for the mirror. However, the lecturer views this issue from an opposite angle. she says that the ship was not able to carry a big reflector. Furthermore, she states that the greeks used tiny peices of mirror to solve the problem.

Secondly, the passage takes another reason into account. the writer suggests that it takes a lot of time for a wooden surface to start burning by a focused mirror. Conversely, the speaker claims that the greeks did not concentrate on the wooden part on the ships. Consequently, she adds that it was another material on the roman ship, named Pitch, that was catching fire in a second.

Finally, the author believes that the specific weapon of the greeks was another material that was working by shooting flaming arrows. On the other hand, the professor mentions that roman soldiers was able to differentiate between these two weapons. Needless to say, she thinks that the mirror was different because of effectiveness and surprising the enemy.
