competition
The article states that altruism is a selfless behavior and provides a few reasons for support. however, the professor in the listening passage refutes this and attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
First of all, the reading assumes that the meerkat which stands as a guard and looks out for predators while others hunt for food or eat food they have obtained exhibits altruism. The professor, however, refutes this point by saying that the meerkat eats before it stands guard.
Secondly, he posits that by standing guard, the sentinel meerkat gains nothing and places itself in grave danger. The professor in the lecturer opposes this claim by saying that the sentinel meerkat is the one escapes immediately once it sees the predators. he says that other meerkats are in danger indeed.
Finally, the article claims that an individual performing an altruistic act gain nothing for themselves. Nevertheless, the professor claims that those individuals get appreciation and a sense of self-satisfaction. For example, if a person donates a kidney, he gets respect from society. A nonmaterial reward is more precious than material reward. Hence, the professor asserts that altruism is not completely selfless. People who exhibit altruism gain happiness.
