otters decrease
The author of the reading and the professor of the listening mentions why the otters on Alaskan shores have decreased. While the author mentions the environmental pollution is the first cause of the problem. The professor, however, is not in the same wavelength for several reasons. He explains the drawbacks of the writer’s claim in the following paragraphs.
First of all, the writer begins by stating that samples of water on the coast show a threshold increment caused by industrial chemical and oil rigs, dropping the otter's numbers. The lecturer, on the other hand, casts doubt on this viewpoint. He says that if those chemical are the reason for falling of otters, it should be so many death otters on the Alaskan shores. So, the idea that predators are the first cause of reducing otters take more strength.
Second, the reading posits that the ecosystem, in general, is at risk for increasing pollution, affecting not only otters, but also other population mammals such as seals and sea lions. The professor, however, disagrees with this view by claiming that the orcas are changing their habits. Since the whales are hunted more by humans, orcas prefer smaller prey, for instance, seals, sea lions, and otters.
As a final point, the writer claims that researchers noticed a different levels of pollution on the Alaskan shores. Thus, in some part of the coast the numbers of otters are less, where there is high contamination, and where are less contamination amount of others stay the same numbers. Again, the professor claims that there is a flaw in the writer’s argument. He goes on saying that the difference in the number of otters come for the spot where they are. In other words, some beaches are easier to reach by orcas than other beaches are tough, in these spots is where there are more amount of otters.
In conclusion, the author and the professor hold conflicting views on this topic. It is clear there will have trouble finding common ground in this issue.
