Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
Low Gravity
To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth.
Mining Valuable Metals
Next, some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth.
Both article and lecture are discussing about the possibilities of starting human colonization in asteroids. The article claims that colonization in asteroids will be easy than that of moon and mars since they posses less gravity. But lecturer challenging authors claims with specific contradictory points.
To begin with author state that landing of spaceship will be much easier in asteroids because of their smaller size and lowergravity. He argues that spacecraft not need to pull forcefully while landing so that itself it can carry more equipments to set up colonies. However lecturer condenting that staying in such low gravity for long period will cause health issues like loss of bone density and muscular mass.
Secondly author posits that asteroid colony will be highly profitable since asteroids are rich with rare and precious elements like gold and platinum and there mining will bribg high profit.Lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that cost to support colonies , mining will surpass the profit. He also noted that increased supply of such rare elements brings down their market.
Finally article mentions that asteroids are easy to reach because thay come closer to eartth periodically .He added that it will be easy to get in and get out of these asteroids. But in contrast lecturer is of the opinion that when it comes closer to earth these asteroid are not going to stay the same point moreover they will travel to longer distances even more than mars can travel.
