Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, grow faster, or withstand adverse conditions. Planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits.
First, genetically modified trees are designed to be harder than natural trees; that is, they are more likely to survive than their unmodified counterparts. In Hawaii, for example, a new pest-resistant species of papaya trees has been developed in response to ring spot virus infections that have repeatedly damaged the native papaya tree population. Planting the genetically modified papayas has largely put an end to the ring spot problem.
Both the article and the lecture are about the Genetic Modified Trees (GMTs) and pluses and minuses of them. While the article states that GMTs has many advantageses not only for palnts but also for people who grow them, the professor, on the other hand, rebuts those notion and opposes the author's reasons.
First, the reading materials posits that GMTs are harder to natural disasters like harsh climate and pests, then they survive longer than the native spicies. It mentions an example of papya tree which has been changed genetically to be resistant to ring spot virus and now this viral disease wiped out from Hawaii. Conversely, the lecturer challenges this advantage by asserting that those GMTs are only resistant to a limited conditin or pest, and they can not tolerate all different climatic chalenges or new pest attack. Since the native population of trees have more genetic diversity they always have some individuals that theycan tolerate different disasters and survive longer.
Second, the article states that GMTs produce more friuts and grow faster, hence, the farmers and caregivers benefit more. They even save money on pesticide usage. The professor, however, refutes this idea by explaining that thsoe GMTs have a hidden cost that makes this cultivating practice less profitable. Farmers should pay for the GMTs' seed every year because they cannot collect those GMTs' seed and used them again. It is forbiden by law.
Third, the author avers that GMTs grow faster than native species; then, they could decrease the overexploitation of the forest. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes this concept by explaining that GMTs damage the natural forest as they grow faster, they compete with the natural trees for resources such as sunlight, soil, and water. In this competition, the native plants defeat and the GMTs overrun them. Then they will destroy the valuabble, native specieses.
