Given is the chart depicting the amount of goods delivered in the UK over the 28-year period from 1974 to 2002 via four distinct means of transportation, including road, water, rail and pipeline.
From an overall perspective, road was used as the most prevalent method to ship products during the period while carrying by pipeline took responsibility the least. Furthermore, shipment by road, sea and pipeline witnessed a significant increase over 28 years while an inconsiderable fluctuation happened in the figure of rail.
As is visible in the illustration, the road was the main way for shipping goods with around 70 million tonnes transported in 1974 and continued to hold this vital role and climb to peak at nearly 100 million tonnes in 2002.
Water and rail were the second to the road in being used for carrying goods at the beginning of the period with roughly 40 million tonnes. However, transportation by sea underwent an upward trend to stand at over 60 million tonnes in the last year while delivery by rail was documented with a considerable oscillation over 28 years before reached back at the initial volume of 40 million tonnes.
Coming in last was the method of pipeline in 1974 with under 5 million tonnes but using this way for moving goods was seen to surge consecutively in the next 28 years and made up over 20 million tonnes at the end of the chart
