Grades encourage students to work harder at school. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
It is critically important that students work as hard as possible at school to get the best outcomes. In my opinion, I believe that teachers can motivate students to study hard by giving them grades. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explain in the following essay.
First and foremost, grading students help them to achieve more comprehensive knowledge in their academic subjects because when a student has an opportunity to earn grades, he will spend more time working on his assignments. Therefore, he will absorb more information and get a better comprehension. On the other hand, students who do not have to worry about grades; will only superficially understand their lessons. My own experience as a student is a compelling example of this. During my sophomore year, I had to complete an assignment in a political science class I was taking. According to the course syllabus, it makes up almost half of my total grades. So, I approached my studies with diligence and care. I prepared a well-articulated presentation; spent long nights up preparing for each possible question that my colleagues might think of it. If it had not for the graded presentation, I would have never worked that hard.
Secondly, grades motivate students because they are a way to determine which people in a group are objectively intelligent. They are assigned systematically to distinguish the best and the brightest students. For instance, when I was a freshman, I took a history class, which only has a pass or fail at the end of the semester. Consequently, I made all the assignments half-hearted with the least effort. On the contrary, when I took the same class in my junior year, but with grades, I put a tremendous amount of effort and time to get the highest score and impress my peers and professors. As you can see, young learners in today's competitive academic environments are eager to get recognized, and grades are the way.
In conclusion, I believe that grades are a perfect tool to encourage students. Not only because they have a significant impact on their academic comprehension, but also they are a way to show superior students.
