The article introduces the topic of function of horns of antilope and deer species. More specifically, in regard to the reading passage, the writer puts forth three theories discribing the functions of antlers. In the listening passage, the lecturer points out that the conclusions made by the author are not correct and address, in detail, the trouble with each point in the reading text.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that horns are used to dissipate heat, cooling blood of the animals. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that if it were true, there would no be reasons for antlers to grow during winters. Additionally, he mentioned that there is examples of aninals inhabited in warm climite that have smaller horns than the aninmals from cold climate do.
Secondly, the author sugggests that the purpose to have such horns is to protect against predators. The lecturer, however, makes the counterargument and mensions that, if horns are the defense mechanism, then females should have them too. But there is no such examples in nature, except one type of deer.
Finally, according to the author, another function of antlers could be to show the firtility to or to to comtete with other males. In a simple words, the larger are horns the stronger and more attractive males are. The professor in the listening is doubtful that this is accurate. He point out that there is no evidence that males with small horns do not have a change for mating. Moreover, it can not be concluded that status of the cirtain male among other males depends on size of its horns.
