Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.
Both the reading passage and lecture discusses about nutria, an annoying pest that is harmful to environment. The former one provides three ways to prevent getting of nutria in farms and gardens while the latter one contends these methods and suggest they cannot stop nutria in encroaching lawns.
First of all, the reading passage mentions that nutria can be prevented by building strong fences of metal that are not damaged by nutria and donot have extra maintainence fee. The professor, however, argues that nutria are notorious animals and are agile in digging. No matter how deep the fence are made, these animlas always find a way to dig deep enough with their sharp claws. So, fences cannot stop nutria from spreading in cultivable lands.
Secondly, the author of the passage says that nutria can be dodged by drying up drainages since drainage helps them to survive and travel. In contrast, the professor implies that drying up drainages will have more negative impacts than the positive ones. He claims that drainage are not only used for farming but also for other purposes. Further, drying of drainage reduces irrigation facilities and results in low production of crops. Hence, getting rid of drainage is a futile solution.
Finally, the passage suggest that cooking nutria for food helps in reducing them. They are delicious and also have large amount of protein and carbohydrates. On the other hand the man in the listening section asserts that nutria are not great for eating since they host a large quantity of bacteria and parasites. They contains pathogens that causes several diseases like Tuberclosos. Moreover, people are reported to have suffered from rash, fevers and other problem after they eat nutria. Thus, nutria cannot be taken as edible food.
Conclusively, the reading passage points three measures to prevent nutria whereas the professor finds these measures pointless.
