Both the reading passage and the lecturer discuss the possibility of life on Mars. While the reading passage describes three ideal characteristics of Mars to be habitable, the lecturer contradicts the reading passage by stating that there are no clear grounds about the information given in the reading passage.
Firstly, the reading passage argues that there is a high possibility of the existence of liquid water on Mars. The Mars Express Mission detected different colored waves that could signify the presence of liquid water. However, the lecturer counters this statement by contending that liquid water cannot exist on Mars. Mars, unlike Earth, is geologically inactive and frigid, making the environment too cold for water to be in the liquid state. Also, the different colored waves from radars could mean other unknown elements besides water.
Secondly, the reading passage asserts that the Martian atmosphere can sustain life, as microbes were discovered in Antarctica, where the environment is very similar to Mars. However, the lecturer contradicts this statement by comparing it with the atmosphere of Earth. The Martian atmosphere is 100 times less dense than that of Earth, leading human beings to be exposed to solar radiation. Also, the temperatures fluctuate immensely at subzero levels. Even if Antarctic microbes are capable of living on Mars, it is still too harsh for humanity.
Lastly, the reading passage mentions that the Curiosity rover has detected methane on Mars, which is a valuable source for human beings. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claim that there is methane on Mars by stating that the data is not reliable since rovers can easily malfunction, and the measuring only took place at limited levels. More accurate data from the European Space Agency in 2016 concluded that there is no methane on Mars even after scanning the whole surface of Mars.
In conclusion, the reading passage claims that there is a possibility for human beings to live on Mars, but the lecturer opposes each of the points mentioned.
