Driverless cars
Both the reading and the lecture are about driverless cars.
The author of the reading feels that driverless cars or self-driving
cars are really useful and they will positively affect peoples' life.
But the lecturer disputes the claims made in the reading. His position
is that driverless cars will not be an advantage and they will actually
affect peoples' life negatively.
Firstly, the author of the reading points out that driverless cars are
safer than the normal vehicles because they are run by software which
are not supposed to make mistakes. The author gave an example of a car that
run over 700,000 miles without an accident to make his clain stronger.
But the lecturer challenges this point. The lecturer thinks that the
computer system that the driverless cars use are made by humans and
they actually make mistakes. He also mentioned that the car the author
mentions actually hit another car and that incident went viral.
Secondly, the author of the reading opines that the self-driving cars
have good impact over environment because they are meant to be more
efficient than a normal vehicle. He also indicates that drivers typically
need to deal with a lot of traffic and that is why they need to stop and
start the engine frequently. But the self-driving cars does not do that
frequently and therefore, they travel at higher speed as well as they are
environment friendly. But the lecturer disagrees with this point. His
position is that more people will start driving if they have driverless
cars because they don't really need license to drive a car. So, there
will be more car on the streets. Therefore, it will have a bad impact on
the surrounding environment.
Finally, The author of the reading posits that self-driving cars will
save peoples' time because they don't really need to concentrate on driving.
He adds that people can do other things while commuting in a self-driving cars.
The lecturer disputes this point of the author too. He contends that people these days
find driving relaxing. Driverless cars will make people work even when they are
commuting and it is not really a good thing.
