Ways to reduce salinity in SAlton lake
Both the reading and the lecture discuss the salt level in the Salton Sea. The article states that the increasing salt level in Salton lake is posing threat to the fish and bird population and provides three ways to reduce its salt level. However, the professor explains that the idea is great but the approach is not realistic and gainsays each method mentioned in the reading.
First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting a method of direct salt removal from the lake through desalinization facilities. Water will be pumped out and evaporated in the facility, leaving salt and other materials behind. This will result in salt-free water which will be returned back to the lake. On the other hand, the speaker excerpts that this method will cause health problems. The material behind will contain both: salt and toxic chemicals. When these harmful materials, for instance, selenium will be released into the air, it will cause breathing problems. Therefore, desalinization through this method is not practical.
Next, the professor further delves into the details by pointing out that the government does not have enough resources to finance the dilution method. Since the shoreline is 100 kilometers away from the lake, long pipes have to construct. AS this is extremely expensive, the government will not pay for the expenses. These claims refute the writer's implication about diluting the lake with ocean water by constructing pipelines or canals between them.
Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring that by constructing walls in the lake, the population can be saved because it will separate the saltwater from freshwater. In contrast, the professor rebuts this theory by showing the inaccuracy of the author that constructing walls is not a permanent solution. They will be destroyed easily by geological activities especially earthquakes. The separation of water could be a temporary solution but not effective for a long time. Since the water will get mixed after the wall destruction, it is not a reliable solution to reduce salt levels.
