The diagram shows the lifecycle of the salmon.
The chart provides information about changes that happen to the salmon during its period of life.
Overall, the whole life of this kind of fish consists of 3 main states, which are eggs, alevin and fish itself (in 5 various shapes and sizes). Furthermore, the salmon lives both in fresh and salt water depending on its stage of growth, for instance, it spawns and grows up in fresh water but lives in the sea for the rest of life.
Specifically, the eggs hatch in fresh water for nearly 3 months, then an alevin appears. Living in the lakes and rivers, an alevin feeds off yolk-sac for several weeks. The next stage is a fry, which is already a full-fledged fish. That stage of evolution still lives in fresh water, as well as a parr.
By contrast, 1 to 3 years old smolts gather in groups and move in the seas, where they spend the most of their lives (from 1 to 8 years). In the end the salmon returns to fresh water, spawn and die within 2 weeks.
