posibily of living on Venus
The reading and the listening are both about whether or not humans can stay on Venus permanently. The author feels that due to some problem it is not a practical idea, and can not be executed. The lecturer on the other hand thinks that the mentioned problem could be solved with some changes in the plan.
To begin with, the author posits that the atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus is so high that could not be managed for humans to land there and stay there. The professor, however, asserts that we can make a floating station 50 km high in the sky of Venus and stay there. At that altitude the atmospheric pressure is merely the same as eath's atmospheric pressure, so the problem would be solved.
Secondly, the author states that since there is not any known water or oxygen on the surface or atmosphere of this planet, if we want to live there, we would need to export these essentials from the earth, which is not doable. The professor provides a solution to this problem. He points out that since there are sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, we can easily make water and oxygen out of these chemicals.
Finally, the author claims that because of the thick cloud layer and the carbon dioxide below it there is a serious lack of light on the surface, for making electricity in order to power our equipment. The professor goes on to say that, at the floating station's altitude, there is still a considerable amount of sunlight that has not gone through the clouds. Moreover, the layer of carbon dioxide that is below the station, would reflect some of the light back to the position of the station. If we place our solar power cell in the way that they could catch both the reflected light from the layer of carbon dioxide and the light that comes from the sum the electrical energy made would be more than enough.
