Essay topics:

A few decades ago, many families had a half dozen or more children. Nowadays, more and more families are choosing to have only one or two children. Are smaller families better than larger ones? Why or why not?

In ancient times people preferred to have large families but with the passage of time socio-cultural and socio-economic values of society changed which also influenced their way of thinking and concepts of living and they started preferring small families having two or three kids over large families.

A few decades ago there were many chances of war and many security challenges to overcome. In that era, People were living in the tribes and the tribes having more members were considered more dominating and safe and had more control on land and resources. Moreover, In case of any attack more individuals are required for defense which were more easy if there are more individuals in the tribe or in other words if they had larger families.

In addition to this, in large families there is a division of labor and people share their expenses. In early ages, people earned their livings through Agriculture and if there were more family members it was easier to work in fields so people in that era usually preferred large families.

Now with the passage of time a cultural shift arrived and people started moving from collectivism towards individualism and people started living in small families.

Now a day’s people prefer small families because now a day’s people earn their livings through jobs and it is difficult to support large families with many members with small amount of earnings. Moreover high inflation rates also restrict people to support large families having many children. For instance, In China people prefer small families having only one kid.
Enlightened upbringing, better understanding and good association in families are also most important aspects of small families. As in small families there are less number of children so family members know more about each other and understand each other’s view point and opinion on a specific matter. Moreover parents can give more time to each child and know their children strengths and weaknesses which help them to nourish and up bring their children in a better way.

In brief, large families have its own pros and cons and small families have its own advantages and disadvantages and both are good but by keeping in view the today’s economic system and benefits like remarkable understanding and association I prefer small families more over large families.
