The line graph illustrates how many commuters used national rail network, London Underground and light rail & metro systems in Great Britain from 1950 to 2004/5.
Overall, the National rail network and London Underground witnessed a fluctuation during the period shown and they had quite a similar trend from 1980 to 2004/5. Furthermore, the number of people using light rail & metro systems was always the smallest during the period from 1960 onwards.
In the year 1950, there were one billion and nearly 750 million passenger journeys made on the national rail network and London Underground in turn, while light rail & metro systems was not put into use. Over the next 32 years, the national rail network and London Underground hit the lowest point of about 625 and 500 million journeys respectively in 1962. Light rail & metro systems appeared around 1962, then the quantity of people using it dropped gradually to 0 in 1980
From 1980 onwards, there was a substantial increase of 500 each in the number of the national rail network and London underground users,and the trend for both ways of transport was quite similar. Light rail & metro system underwent a slight increase to over 125 million users in 2004/5.
