Overall, the data on acid rain emissions in the UK witnessed a considerable decline between 1990 and 2007. The most dramatic decrease was seen in the electricity, gas and water supply sector.
In 1990, approximately 3.3 million tonnes of acid rain emissions was produced by the electricity, gas and water sector, which was the highest figure of the year. The transport and communication sector contributed about 0.7 million tonnes of emissions, followed by the domestic sector with around 0.6 million tonnes. The total quantities of other industries were close to 2 million tonnes.
Between 1990 to 2007, there was a downward trend in the figures for almost categories. The highest drop of almost 3 million tonnes was saw in the emissions from electricity. The figures for acid rain gases from the domestic sector went down minimally, bottoming out at 0.3 million in 2007; meanwhile, the transport and communication sector saw a slight increase in emissions, reaching a peak of 1 million tonnes in 2005. Additionally, there was an insignificant decrease of around 0.7 million tonnes in the other industries from 1990 to 2007.
