In the United States,employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money,which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full- time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four- day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

Firstly, the writer explains that a short workweek would increase the company's profits as the employees are more rested and hence make few errors in their work. On the contrary, the lecture negates this argument. He argues that the company would not be benefited from a four-day workweek. He adds that since the company has to spend more money on adding more employees it would cost them more as they need to provide training and health benefits. In addition, the company also has to increase the office space and buy more computers if they hire more which would result in a decrease of their profit.
Secondly, the passage talks about how the four-day workweek can help with unemployment in the country. In contrast, the lecture rebuts this statement. It put it down by explaining that since hiring is costly the company would try not to hire more people. Instead, the company would make the current employees work overtime and raise the expectations that one has to work more i. e it would expect a four-day workweek employee to do five-day work in just 4 days. As a result, this would make the employee's life unpleasant.
Finally, the author also expresses his idea that a four-day workweek would give an employee more free time for himself and it would increase his quality of life and can pursue his private interests. The lecturer in the listening passage is doubtful about this. He contends that having more free time adds some risks and reduces the quality of free time. To add to the above, the employee would also have less job stability and lose his job during economic downtime. He continues that a five-day workweek employee would be given a preference for promotion as he is available the whole week to ensure and monitor the work.
