Additionally, an upward trend was seen in Rock and Country albums on sale rate whereas there was a slight lull in that of Alternative and R&B albums. By contrast, the proportion of Jazz albums being sold remained unchanged over the period shown.
Looking at the charts in detail, in 2008 Rock was the dominant genre, accounting for approximately 39% of all sales, and the figure remained relatively constant in the subsequent year then reached the pinnacle of 40% in 2010. Moreover, the sale of Country albums in 2008 represented around 13%, a third of the Rock figure in the same year, which slightly accelerated to 16% in 2009 then jumped further to around 18% in 2010.
On the other hand, roughly 23% of US albums being sold in 2008 was in the Alternative genre, a year later that of Alternative shrank abruptly, making up only 20%, followed by a period of stability. The data showed that 22% of the US music album consumption fell into the R&B category by 2008, remaining almost constant in 2009 then the figure went down minimally and hit a low of 19% in 2010.
