The line graph illustrates the US government’s expenditure on research in five fields ( health, space, energy, general science and other) from 1980 to 2008.
Overall, it can be seen that spending on all categories increased except expenditure on others decreased. It is also notable that, the budget spent on health was the highest while the amount of money spent on general science was the lowest in the whole period.
From 1980 to 1984, the amount of money spent on health slightly decreased to 7 billion dollars. Then, over a period of 20 years, expenditure on health significantly rose and reached a peak in 2004, with 22,5 billion dollars. In 2008, spending on health decreased minimally to 18 billion dollars. With that, between 1980 and 2008, the budget spent on general science rose from 2,5 to 5 billion dollars.
Over a period of 28 years, the amount of money spent on energy and space increased slightly from 5 billion dollars and 6 billion dollar to 7,5 billion dollars and 9 billion dollars respectively. During the same period, spending on others decreased minimally from 7,5 billion dollars to 5 billion dollars.
