In 1822, at the age of 25, Austrian composer Franz Schubert began to work on a symphony in B Minor, his 8th Symphony.
In the lecture, the professor talked about Schubert’s 8th Symphony. Disputing the arguments in the passage that this work was complete, he cited several pieces of evidence showing that the musician considered his work not finished.
First, the professor said that Shubert lived at the end of the classical era, and it is more likely for him to follow the tradition of four movements. He stated that although there were precedents such as Beethoven having writing only two movements, and Schubert was fond of pushing the boundary in music, following the heritage of classical era is a more possible choice for the musician. This contradicts with the passage’s claim that Schubert was being innovative by writing only two movements.
Second, he said that there are evidence indicating that Schubert had indeed written the third and the fourth movements. While it is true that writing three movements with the same meters in a row was unusual during that time as the passage suggested, historians have found the track of the remaining movements. The remnants include an early piano version of the third movement written in three meters and a draft of the fourth movement being torn apart.
Third, the professor dismissed the passage’s claim that since the symphony with two movements sounded flawless, Schubert considered it complete. Instead, the professor stated that just because the first two movements were in such a wonderful state that Schubert was having difficulty completing the remaining parts of the symphony.
