Overall, the total of miles commuted by citizens in England increased significantly during the period of 15 years. Interestingly, cars were seen as the most popular among 8 means of transport.
During 15 years, cars were the head with 3,199 miles in1985 and then this figure rose dramatically by nearly 1000 miles in 2000. Taxi and long distance buses were the least common modes of travel in England, these numbers increased gradually between 1985 and 2000, from 13 miles to 42 miles and 54 to 124 respectively. Similarly, in 2000, people in England used others and trains regularly, leading to the rise in these figures.
The distance travelled by walking witnessed a slight decrease, from 255 miles to 237 miles.
Bicycle use fell from 51 to 41 miles over the period shown, while the biggest downward change was in the use of local buses, with average miles per person falling from 429 to 274 over the 15-year period.
