There has been much discussion about whether our early human ancestors, the Homo erectus species, were first able to control fire on a regular basis. Many archaeologists believe that some 1.6 million year ago, the early human ancestors referred to as Hominins had control over fire when they emerged from Africa.
Disputing the passage's arguments that the Homo erectus species had control over fire approximately 1.6 million years ago, the professor cites several pieces of evidence showing that humans did not control fire until 400000 years ago.
First, the professor takes exception to the passage's claim that the human ancestors relied on cooked food for nutrition to support their highly developed bodies and brains. While it is true that cooked foods are rich in nutrients, they aren't the only nutritious food source. Rather, the species had excellent sources of vegetation, such as root vegetables. Moreover, their teeth were well-suited for tearing and chewing meat so they could take in plenty of nutrition from raw meat.
Second, dismissing the passage's argument that there are fire traces indicating that this species had created fire, the professor maintains that the geological time of these traces is not earlier than one million years ago. Furthermore, it is also likely that they utilized natural sources of fire, such as lightning and volcano, instead of producing one by themselves.
Third, he believes that the freezing environment during this time doesn't mean that the human species had no choice but to rely on fire. Instead, they could take advantage of natural resources. For example, they could take shelter in caves. What's more, they could also make warm clothes to keep off the chill.
