Plain of Jars building
Both the reading and the lecture are about the possible explanations for a mystery site called Plain of Jars. Actually, the writer is proposing three theories regarding the purpose of building this site. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of this and casts doubt on each of theories presented in the passage. Having categorically rejected them, the lecturer explains the reasons.
To begin with, both the article and the speaking put forth to the idea of fermentation goals of building this site. In this vein, the writer disputes that this area is built in obedience of a king's order to ferment a special drink for their celebrations. This specific argument is challenged by the professor. He is of the opinion that since there exist pots made of clay for the aim of fermentation, and also producing jars from stone was a time consuming, tedious and expensive process, therefore, contemplating them as a fermentation jar does not seem feasible. Especially, when those clay pots worked out as effective as stone ones.
Secondly, the author argues that since the location experienced dry climate as much as rainy one, and also, the site is near trading routs, the jars may have been built to contain water for traders in dry seasons. Contrastly, the author opposes this notion by averting that although the site is adjacent to trading passages, however the routs are near streams and rivers which can provide the required water for travelers. Consequently, the travelers did not have to build an additional source of water by these jars.
Finally, the passage indicates that as many jewelry and tools have been found from the site, it may have been the relics of a burial site and the jars served as tombs. On the other hand, the professor's stance is that burial monuments required covers in order to protect tombs from weather or even thieves. However, whereas the jars are left without any covering, they cannot be considered as tombs.
