Overall, the number of couples who first-time married was definitely high from 1951 to 2001. Meanwhile, there were not many remarriages were held in the same period.
At the beginning of the period, there are about 400,000 marriages in the uk then the number increased, hitting a high-point of 450,000 in the year 1971. But from which point, it went down gradually and touched the lowest point of about 350,000 in 2001.
between 1951 and 1961, the number of first marriages and remarriages remained steady. In this period, the number of remarriages was about 200,000 lower than that of first marriages. The total number of couples who married for the first time rose slightly in 1971 then declined steadily to the end of the period while the number of those remarrying had almost no change until the year 1991, it increased mildly and hit a peak of 200,000 in the last year.
