Spartacus as a hero
The readings presents three reasons on why Sparracus has been admired by historians and the general public. Whereas the lecturer contradicts these reasons mentioning that they are not historically accurate relying on stories.
First, the passage notes that Sparracus and his army had a admirable goal of returing to their homelands. The lecturer, however, points out that this is not aligned with the available historical facts. In fact they had an opportunity to return home, instead, they marched towards Rome. This facts admits that Sparracus wanted to conqur Rome with an aim for revenge and wealth.
Second, the reading suggests that Sparracus's first victories against Roman army is an illustration his sheer military skills. However, the speaker states that the reason behind these intial achievements is that at the biginning of the war, the Romans did not take him and his army seriously. Therefore, they sent a poorly trained and ill-equipped army to put down the Sparracus's men. Once they replaced with the best Roman army they lost the battle. This means that Sparracus was not a genious.
Third, Sparracus's advocacy for human rights of the slaves is not based on reality. In the 18th century in Europe, there was an anti-slavory movement. This movement needed a spritual hero, leading to writing a story based on Sparracus life presenting him as an inspiring anti-slavory historic figure.
