Transient lunar phenomena (TLP) are relatively brief flashes of light that appear to come from the surface of the Moon. Such flashes of light have been observed for centuries by both amateur and professional astronomers, and several theories have been put forward to explain them.
Transient Lunar Phenomena has been a topic of discussion among scientists. The passage argues that TLPs are not real and there are other reasons for them being observed. The lecturer, on the other hand, challenges the ideas presented in the passage by arguing that TLPs are real.
First of all, the passage argues that TLPs are the result of difficiencies in the telescope technologies. The passage adds that even small defects in the instruments can cause defectious results and TLPs are simply errors observed by the instruments. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that if the instruments were defectious, the results would not be similiar by different observants. Stating that, different observers have seen same TLPs at the same time.
Secondly, the text proposes the meteor theory for TLPs. This theory states that TLPs are simply rays of light that are produced as the result of meteors crashing at the surface of the moon. The lecturer opposes this idea by saying that flashes of light produced by the impacts will not last as long as TLPs last. Lights emitted as the result of impacts last for one second, yet TLPs last for more than 20 minutes. In addition to that, according to lecturer, TLPs are not being reported at the times of meteor showers.
Lastly, the thermoluminescence theory is also opposed by the lecturer. According to this theory, certain rocks emit light when sun shines at them. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that those rocks cannot generate light because the surface of the moon is brighter than them. Although some rocks might shine but they will not shine as bright as the surface and the reason for those lights are TLPs.
