In the lecture, the professor discusses why the ideas to control the spreading of cheatgrass are not useful. This casts doubt on the reading, which states that could be easy managing the cheatgrass invasion in North America.
First, the lecturer talks about the grazers preference for other plants that ARE not the cheatgrass. So, animals on open fields would prefer to eat other plants and not the cheatgrass. This contradicts the information in the reading, with claims that encouraging animals to feed on this plant should be a good option to solve the problem. Mainly because the problem is higher in places where cattle and other livestock are normally most raised.
In addition, the speaker makes the point that cheatgrass produces many, many seeds and these seedS could germinate even a few years after the A fire endS. Therefore, a lot of these structures are below the soil, where the fire can’t damage them. This opposes statements in the reading, which asserts that the using controlled fires will eliminate just the cheatgrass and benefit the native species growth.
Finally, the professor clarifies that the cheatgrass and the fungal parasite have lived together in the original habitat for thousand of years. This period gave the cheatgrass the possibility to create resistance against the parasite, damaging only already weak or sick individuals. Conversely, this refutes the text which states that the introduction of this specific kind of fungal parasite impossibilite the cheatgrass reproduction.
Clearly, the professor disagrees with all reasons given in the reading passage.
