The reading passage and the lecture are both about the ruin of Easter Island civilization. From their contexts, it can be stated that the prevailing discussion is about the possible reasons to explain the civilization collapse. While the author of the text claims that there are three reliable causes for the ruin, the lecturer completely refutes the arguments in the article. Hence, arguing that these explanations are faulty for the following reasons.

Firstly, it is said by the lecturer that there were rats in the island that consumed tree’s seeds but there were still enough food to eat and survive. Furthermore, sixty percent of inhabitants diet came from sea. Moreover, the Island’s soil was rocky, consequently, protected against erosion.
This directly contradicts the reading passage that denotes that an infestation of rats and consequently deforestation and soil erosion contributed to the starvation and the end of the civilization.

Secondly, the lecturer safely assumes that the blades encountered by archeologists were not weapons or war instruments. After careful analyses, they observed that the blades were not pointed or sharp, therefore, they could be used to construct statues and homes. This idea strongly contrasts with the article that mentions that conflicts or internal warfare using these possible weapons had caused the decline in population.

Finally, the lecturer believes that Island population suffered from diseases due to the contact with immigrants, however, the beginning of this decline have started long before this contact, during 17 century. The text, on the other hand, states that the contact with the immigrants in the 19 century was the probable cause for the decline.
