The bar chart above illustrates the usage of the Internet in Australia for various purposes in the period between 2010 and 2011 as well as the percentage of users for each purpose mentioned.
At the first glance, the highest percentage of Australian usage belonged to emailings meanwhile the lowest were paying bills online and social media, as well as sharing the same percentage of user’s age.
Looking in closer detail, about 70 percent of individuals surfed the Internet with the intention of contacting emails, the highest proportion compared to the others. Equally showing lower statistics, social media and online-bill payments were less popular purposes, which made up about 49 percent and 50 percent relatively.
Comparing between different age groups, with approximately 80 percent of individuals , Australians who were 65 above used the Internet with the view of sending emails and paying bills through online platforms meanwhile this range of age offered the least important contribution in social media, at around 30%. In contrast, youngsters at the age of 18 to 25 were likely to surf social media which was obviously the vast majority with nearly 100%. However, this group possessed the lowest users in emailings and online payments, at 60%, which was comparatively lower than 20 percent owing to the highest groups.
