Yellow-legged Mountain Frog
As yellow-legged mountain frogs become a member of the endangered species, the reasons why they are disappearing still remain a mystery to scientists. Although a few theories have been presented in the passage, they are still inconclusive according to the lecture.
The passage indicates that the introduction of trout into streams and lakes in the mountain has caused the frogs' population to decrease, since trout are new to the area, and they can eat young frogs. However, the lecture states that people started to introduce trouts hundreds of years ago. In addition, the frogs only started disappearing about forty years ago, therefore the two events seem to be unrelated.
The lecture also proves that pesticides can't reach the place where the frogs live, which is exactly opposite to the theory in the lecture that is about chemicals can affect the places where the frogs live, because there is an area that has lots of farms near frogs’ habitats, and a lot of chemicals are used. Their shelters are far from farms and are higher than theirs. Even though rainwater carries the chemicals, it seems unlikely for water to carry chemicals upward.
After challenging the first two theories, the lecture begins to deal with the last one. The passage claims that a type of disease in recent years names fungal disease can attack frogs' skin, which may cause their death. According to the lecture, this is a type of chemical in their skin that can help them to prevent diseases.
In a word, all theories in the passage are indecisive, consequently, it remains a mystery waiting for us to uncover.
