The reading and the lecture are both about the habitabality of Venus. The author of the reading believes that extreme conditions on Venus makes in uninhabitable for human. The claims made by the author are challenged by the lecturer. He is of the opinion that although it is difficult for men to live on Venus surface, they can fabricate a floating station 50 kilometers above the planet's surface.
First of all, the author suggests that the high pressure at Venus' surface is one the most significant challanges for human. It is stated in the reading that the pressure is at least 90 times bigger than that of the Earth's suface and can wreck everything lands on Venus' surface. The lecturer refutes this specific argument by explaining that although the pressure is substantially high at venus' surface, it is considerably more moderate in 50 kilometers above the planet's surface, and humans can easily withstand this pressure.
Secondly, the author posits that oxygen and water are two essential factors for a habitat to be habitable for mankind, and Venus lacks such crucial substances and importing them from the Earth is not rational. Therefore, Venus can not support human life. The lecturer, on the other hand, believes that even though the planet does not have water or oxygen, it has chemical substances that can be used to produce these matters; consequently, there is no need to import these substances from the Earth.
Finally, the author proposes that the Venus' atmosphere reflects most of the light emited from sun, and a small portion of it reaches the planets surface, which makes it tough to make electricity and charge machines and equipments. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by argueing that the amount of sunlight recieved at 50 kilometers away from the planet's surface is more than enough. He notes that the reflection of sunlight caused by the clouds provides the station with even more sunlight than is expected to be recieved directly from the sun.
