The article talks about the early works of James MacNeil Whistler. Specifically, the writer discusses proof that the recently discovered painting of a woman in a white dress, though not signed by Whistler, is likely to be one of his early works. The speaker in the listening passage disagrees. He believes that there is not enough evidence to support the writer’s claims and he attacks each of the claims in the reading.
First, the writer begins by saying that three years after Whistler’s death, this painting was included in one of the exhibitions of paintings in London organized by one of Whistler’s close friends and the painting was attributed to being whistlers. The speaker, on the other hand, refutes this point by saying that according to records, the show was not for an exhibition of whistler’s works but it was the friend’s show and therefore, not enough reason to attribute the painting to be that of Whistler’s early paintings.
Secondly, the author also claims that the woman in the painting clearly resembles the woman in Whistler’s “Symphony in White”. Again, the speaker believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic. He holds that the painting could have been done by a lot of other painters in Whistler’s time. He further says that the use of black and white does not necessarily make it whistlers as that was the common style at that time. Therefore, the claim is not sufficient enough to conclude that the painting is that of Whistler.
Finally, the writer concludes his argument by suggesting that the small butterfly in the corner of the painting gives direct evidence of Whistler’s authorship of the work. Not Surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that the butterfly on the painting is at the lower right corner but Whistler always draws the butterfly in his paintings at the upper left corner of his works he further says that this painting could just be a forgery by someone trying to make his work look like it was painted by Whistler. Therefore, he states that this claim is not convincing enough.
To sum up, both the writer and the speaker holds conflicting views about the painting of the woman in a white dress to be an early work of Whistler. It is therefore evident that they will have a problem finding a common ground on this issue.
