In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: they may be navigating by the stars, much as early human sailors did. What we know about humpback whales makes this a distinct possibility.
The reading passage and the lecture talk about the topic of humpback whales navigating by the stars for great-distance migration. Despite that, the professor thinks the explanation mentioned in the reading is not convincing. He casts doubt on every single point the reading makes and provides his insights to support his view in the lecture.
To begin with, the reading states that humpback whales are clever enough that they can use stars to navigate directions. However, the speaker claims that there is no real connection between intelligence and using stars. For example, ducks have average intelligence that uses stars for navigation. Therefore, it is clear that there is no high connection between intelligence and this behavior. Navigating by stars could just be the instinct of humpback whales. As a result, the professor can not give a nod to the author in terms of the first point.
Secondly, about the behavior of migrating in straight lines, the writer thinks that stars show signals to the humpback whales whereas the speaker holds the view that humpback whales orient themselves by the earth's magnetic field. Apparently, the professor's argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.
In addition, the reading passage suggests that humpback whales have a rare behavior and it is because they are tracking stars. The professor, on the other hand, argues that sharks also have similar behavior but they are seeking food instead of stars. Also, this behavior happens in the daytime. It is not possible that the behavior is related to stars.
