An international development organization, in response to a vitamin A deficiency among people in the impoverished nation of Tagus, has engineered a new breed of millet high in vitamin A. While seeds for this new type of millet cost more, farmers will be paid subsidies for farming the new variety of millet. Since millet is already a staple food in Tagus, people will readily adopt the new variety. To combat vitamin A deficiency, the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote this new type of millet.
An international development organization, concludes that
to overcome the deficiency of vitamin A, the government of
Tagus should do everything to promote the new engineered
millet among the citizen of Tagus. The argument is not
persuasive and it is not logically right. The organization has
not suported the argumnet with proper facts and figures.
The organization claims that there is a deficiency of vitamin
A among the citizen of Tagus. The flaw in the statment
would be that we do not know how many citizen are having
a deficiency, what age group of people are having it. It
could also happen that the organization only took the
sample from elderly and they could have deficiency of
vitamin A due to some medicine which they are taking. The
organization should take a survey and provide us with a
proper data. Unless, we do not have a proper data, the
government should not start promoting the new type of
millet.
Secondly, the organization claims that as the millet is
already the staple food of people in Tagus, citizen would
eaisly adapt it. It could happen that the food which is made
from new type of millet does not taste good. This could be
a loss for the farmers as no one would buy from them in
the future and the subsidies which are provided would go
to waste. It could also happen that there are some side
effects of eating this new engineered millet. The
organization has not provided us with any type of
certificate that the food grain is safe for consumption and
there is no harmful side effects on the human. It could be
risky to promote stuff without knowing its effects. If
something happens than the government is held
responsible for it.
Thirldy, it could happen that the new engineered millet
consumes more nutrients from the soil, making the soil
unfertile. To keep the soil fertility, the farmers would have
to used more fertilizers which increase the cost and it is
harmful for the health. Unless, the organization ensures
that the new millet does not required more nutrients to
grow, the farmer should not accept it.
The international development organization should provide
with all the data and should ensure that the new
engineered millet are safe for consumptions and do not
have any side effects. They shoud also confirm that the soil
would not become unfertile using the new seeds. Unless,
the organization provies with proper response, and the
doubts are not clear, the government should not promote
the new type of millet.
