In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an ageing creates problems for government. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people. To what extend do the advantages of having an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages ?
In contemporary society, individuals are experiencing longer lifespans than ever before. This phenomenon has ignited polarized two opinions: While some argue that an ageing population poses challenges for governments, others believe that having more elderly individuals in society can be advantageous. However, I contend that although there are certain benefits to an ageing population, its drawbacks are far greater.
On the positive side, older individuals can bring valuable contributions to the workforce, particularly in terms of diversity. Their wealth of experience and unique perspective can enhance innovation and problem-solving within organizations. For instance, in Japan, a nation noted for its high life expectancy where the elderly often function as community advisors. They offer wisdom on a broad array of issues, from resolving personal disputes to planning local events. Moreover, elderly people often play a vital role in providing care and support for their grandchildren, easing the burden on working parents and promoting familial bonds.
However, the disadvantages of an ageing population are far more significant. One major concern is addressing the financial implications that an ageing population purportedly places on governmental resources. Concerns often revolve around the rising costs of healthcare, pensions, and specialized social services, seen as strains that could divert funds from other critical sectors such as education or infrastructure. Additionally, the shrinking workforce resulting from an ageing population can take a heavy toll on productivity and economic growth. For instance, in several European countries facing demographic challenges, the dependency ratio, which measures the number of non-working individuals compared to the working population, has been steadily increasing. This can give rise to a reduction in tax revenues and a rise in pension and healthcare expenses, causing significant concerns for policymakers in these nations.
In conclusion, while older individuals can foster workplace diversity, I strongly believe that the burden they place on healthcare systems greatly outweighs this advantage because the need to allocate substantial funds to meet the growing heathcare demands of an ageing population can have detrimental effects on other vital areas of society
