Overall, during the 20-year survey period, more and more people came to the UK with the answer of going on a holiday as the most popular.
In 1989, around 6.5 million people chose the UK as their holiday destination, the most popular reason among the 3 surveyed answers. This number rose dramatically and peaked at 9 million in 1999 before plunging back to 6.5 million in 2004. However, after that, the UK once again gained back its popularity among holiday-goers as the number increased steadily to 9 million in 2009.
Starting at 5 million people in 1989, the number of people going on a business trip to the UK slightly dropped to 4 million in 1994. There was a fluctuation in an upward trend from then to the end of the surveyed period, from which the final recorded number was 7 million.
There were around 3.5 million people answered that they went to the UK to visit friends and family at the beginning of the period. This number increased steadily before experiencing a sharp drop to 6 million in 2009.
