The chart illustrates average weekly spending by families over a 50-year period form 1968 to 2018. The data are measured in percentage of weekly income.
Overall, over 5 decade, there was a general upward trend in the family financial allocation. Noticeably, in 1968, the finance for food held the dominant proportion of the the total spending, while that for fuel and power hit the trough of the whole graph. In 50 years later, the top position in figures changed to spending for leisure, whereas the figures for fuel and power were still reported as the lowest.
Particularly, to begin with 1968, leading the total figures were those for food, recorded at a roughly 35%. The second top position went for housing, with it statistics less than one third of those for the former. Spending for clothing and footwear shared the same percentage with that for housing; while less than 10% of weekly income was recorded in each of 4 other sections, including household goods, personal goods, transport and leisure. Finally, fuel and power made for the smallest proportion of the whole chart, at only more than 5%.
In 2018, money spent on leisure led the whole chart, accounting for over 20%. In contrast, spending for food halved the counterpart in 1968; similarly, other 3 sections, including fuel and power, clothing and footwear, personal goods, underwent the similar pattern, decreasing to approximately 5%. Not only to leisure did the allocated money to housing and transport also surgered to nearly 20% and 15% respectively. Only the spending for household goods stood unchanged, remaining at more than 5% throughout the record period.
