The bar chart below shows the passenger kilometres traveled by different means of transport in the UK in 1990 and 2000.
The bar chart compares the number of passenger kilometers travelled by five distinct modes of transportation in the UK spanning 10 years from 1990 to 2000. Units are measured in billions.
Overall, bus and rail were by far the most popular means of transport, as opposed to others. Another interesting highlight is that both bicycle and motorbike travel underwent a downturn whilst the trend was reversed for the rest of surveyed categories (including total).
In 1990, buses topped the list at around 45 billion, followed by the second place of rail (40 billion). Moreover, aviation travel was far lagging behind with only 5 billion in the same year. 10 years later, the passenger kilometres covered by bus, rail and air travel all gradually climbed to less than 50 billion for the first two modes and just under 10 billion for the last one. Following similar patterns, total kilometres travelled also showed a rise of approximately 10 billion in the same year.
On the other hand, fewer kilometres were travelled by bicycle and motorbike during the same time frame with the former seeing a negligible drop from 2.5 billion in 1990 to 2 billion in 2000 and the latter witnessing a change from 3 billion in 1990 down to a bit less than the original number in 2000.
