Compare/ Contrast Essay
The first FIFA World Cup (1930) vs. The first modern Olympic Games (1896)
Sport is a crucial part of the social life of people for many years. In the past, our ancestors have already investigated many advantages of it. Playing a sport not only helps residents entertain efficiently after busy, tired working days but also creates a huge impact on shaping a fit, healthy body. As a result, there were many kinds of competitions, and championships at that time to encourage more participants to take parts such as the FIFA World cup (which was first held in 1930) and the modern Olympic Games (1896). These two tournaments, which had the same journey of formation and development, both wanted to enhance cohesion and improved the relationship among the countries around the world. But the concentration on different kinds of sports and the attention on female sportsmanship made modern Olympic games became more comprehensive.
FIFA, which is a governing body of association football, had already planned to create a new championship series for football devotees even before the year 1930. Because FIFA, at that time, was working as the manager for the football section in the Olympic Games and realizing the remarkable growth of the viewers in football, particularly in the 1924 and 1928 tournaments, they decided to organize a new sports competition just concentrate on the football which was called as the FIFA World Cup. Therefore, in 1930 a whole new contest appeared and became one of the biggest and most prestigious football competitions so far. Additionally, the 1930 World Cup games were held in Estadio Centenario stadium, Montevideo (capital city), and took place from 13 to 30 July.
Otherwise, the ideas and work of certain people led to the creation of the modern Olympics. Particularly, Pierre, baron de Coubertin, born in Paris, and Dr. William Penny Brookes in England were the two people that spend most of their life, their dedication to the revival of the Modern one from Ancient Olympic competition. At first, it was agreed that the Games should be held in Paris in 1900. However, six years seemed a long time to wait and eventually, it was decided to change the newly organized place to Athens and the time to April 1896, on the Greek Independence Day. These two sport-tournaments forming period both needed to suffer from many barriers and obstructions to be globally published to football lovers like now. Although the FIFA World Cup in 1930 got the consensus to create the contest together, the Olympic Games in 1896 seemed not to have as many agreements as the aforementioned one.
The World Cup Tournament had about 517 million live audience viewers through television and on the Internet in 1930. Especially, there was only one type of sport in this champion series which was football; therefore, all the fans worldwide could know exactly what sport they were expecting. And they can focus on watching and enjoying their favorite by themselves without being bordered by events that they were not interested in such as cycling or gymnastics. The World Cup 1930 helped the host and other countries enhance the relationship, the cohesion which led to long-lasting development among countries. Also, increasing valuable tourism and boosting the local economy were two of many other advantages that Uruguay (the host) received from this prestigious football International Contest.
Similarly, the modern Olympics also contributed to the evolution and broaden more opportunities in the economy and tourism for Greece which was the host in 1896. The Games consisted of nine events including Cycling, Swimming, Athletics, Fencing, Shooting, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, and Gymnastics. It was obvious that more kinds of the sport were played in this competition so that the athletes not only in football but also from other sports could show their talents which increased the diversity and the joy for the whole contest.
The women's World Cup championship series did not get attention from FIFA for such a long time later (sixty-one years long). The first one was held in Guangdong, China but surprisingly, it was separated from the Men's World Cup. The main reason was that the Female football contest could negatively affect the viewership of the competition and the income of FIFA; therefore, it showed that FIFA was unconcern the feminists and just cared for their profit.
Correspondingly, the modern Olympic Games was also not included women in its tournament at first. However, after 4 years (1900) the Female Olympics was organized in Hélène de Pourtalès of Switzerland, and not like FIFA, the Olympics held both the two gender in the same competition to enhance the power, the spirit of women and prove that women can also perform sports as well as men.
In conclusion, the appearance of these two Sports tournaments (FIFA World Cup 1930 and modern Olympic Games 1896) was a foundation for later competitions and also contributed to the harmony among countries. In terms of diversity in sport and gender, the Olympics Games were more outstanding than the FIFA World Cup but in general, these two had some similarities in the purpose of organizing and the formation period as well.
