Essay topics:

*The following is a recommendation from the Board of Directors of Monarch Books.

"We recommend that Monarch Books open a café in its store. Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Clearly, opening the café would attract more customers. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal

Books, which recently opened its own café.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation

In the following recommendation from the Board of Directors of Monarch Books it was stated that the Monarch Books must open a café in its store. To support the argument the evidence provided was that Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years and also has a large customer base which will attract more customers upon the opening of the café .Also they state that for café space can be made by discontinuing the children book section , citing the reason of that its popularity will decrease in coming years. Though the underlying issue is valid , because of lack of evidence and vague language , this recommendation is deeply flawed. Following are some of the questions that would need to be answered to come to the conclusion.

Firstly, having the large customer base for the shop can it be considered as the sole and viable reason to open a café ? For example it may be the case that the customers would only love to buy books from the store instead of coming to the café. Perhaps the customers would love to continue visiting to their old favourite café. If the above points are true , then the authors argument gets weakened.

Secondly, discontinuing the children's book section just because the recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten sounds too weak and a decision taken without much interpretation. What if the store is famous for the Children Book section? Perhaps the buyers mostly comprise of children of age below 10. Therefore this action to create space for Café by removing the children section holds no water

Finally , the author compares that the opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened its own café. Here the author makes a baseless comparison between Monarch and Regal Café. For example , the author here does not take into account the area and the popularity of Regal Café . What is more people love to Visit Regal Books for its Café rather than the Book store. Also there is no description regarding any other café in the area which can give competioon to the Monarch Book store. So basically weakening the argument further.

To sum up, the argument as it stands now is considerably flawed due to its reliance on several unwarranted assumtions. If the author is able to provide more evidence (perhaps in the form of systematic research study) then it will be possible to fully evaluate the argument.
